Privacy Policy
Effective date: June 22, 2026 · Last updated: July 14, 2026
Expo ("Expo," "we," "us," or "our") provides an AI-native recipe app that learns your culinary preferences, generates personalized recipes, imports recipes from blogs, videos, and physical copies, and acts as a voice-powered cooking companion. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have.
By creating an account or using the Expo app (the "App"), you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.
1. Information We Collect
We collect the following categories of information. The headings below mirror the data types disclosed on our App Store product page.
Contact Info
- Name — the name you provide when you set up your profile (optional).
- Email address — required to create and sign in to your account.
- Phone number — if you choose to use features that involve your phone number or invite friends.
User Content
- Photos or videos — if you import a recipe by taking a photo of a physical recipe card or printed page, the image is sent to our recipe-extraction service to read the recipe text. We do not retain the photo after processing.
- Recipes and cooking content you create — recipes you generate, write, edit, import, save, organize, rate, or comment on.
- Preferences you provide — dietary restrictions, allergies, taste ratings, and other culinary preferences you share so we can personalize recipes for you.
Identifiers
- User ID — an identifier we assign to your account so your recipes and preferences stay associated with you across sessions and devices.
- Device ID — a device identifier used for functions such as registering your device for push notifications.
Usage Data
- Product interaction — how you use the App, such as recipes generated, cooking sessions started, screens viewed, and features used. We use this for analytics, to personalize your experience, and to operate App functionality.
Diagnostics
- Crash data — information about app crashes, including error type and diagnostic context.
- Performance data — information about app responsiveness, such as freezes, launch times, and network quality.
- Other diagnostic data — additional technical information that helps us diagnose and fix problems.
Diagnostics data is collected to keep the App stable and is not linked to your identity.
Search History
- Search and intent activity — the things you search for or ask Expo to make, used to operate and improve App functionality. This data is not linked to your identity.
Location
- Approximate (coarse) location — if you use the grocery "shop your ingredients" feature to find nearby stores, the App requests your approximate location while you are using the App. Your device resolves it to a postal (ZIP) code and country on-device, and only that postal code — not precise coordinates — is sent to our service to look up nearby grocery stores. We do not use your location for advertising. If you decline the permission, you can enter a ZIP code manually instead.
The App does not track you across other companies' apps or websites for advertising purposes.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Create and manage your account and authenticate you when you sign in.
- Generate, refine, and import recipes personalized to your tastes, dietary needs, and allergies.
- Power the interactive, voice-enabled cooking assistant.
- Provide social features you choose to use, such as following friends, sharing meal plans, and commenting.
- Send push notifications you have opted into (for example, shared meal-plan invitations and social activity) and cooking-timer alerts.
- Process subscriptions and in-app purchases.
- Find nearby grocery stores and, if you connect a grocery account, add the ingredients you select to your cart.
- Measure usage, run product experiments, and improve the App.
- Detect, diagnose, and fix crashes, performance issues, and bugs.
- Protect the security and integrity of the App and our users, and comply with legal obligations.
3. Voice and Microphone
When you use the voice-powered cooking assistant, the App uses your device's microphone and speech recognition to detect spoken commands (for example, "Ready" or "Next") so it can advance cooking steps. To read recipe steps aloud, recipe step text is sent to a text-to-speech provider to generate audio. We do not use your voice recordings for advertising, and we do not store your voice recordings to build a voice profile.
4. Camera and Photos
If you import a recipe from a physical copy, the App uses your camera to capture the page. The captured image is sent to our recipe-extraction service to read and structure the recipe, and is then discarded. The App does not access your photo library.
5. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only in the following circumstances:
Service providers
We use trusted third-party providers to operate the App. These providers process data on our behalf and only for the purposes described here:
- Cloud hosting, authentication, and storage — to store your account, recipes, preferences, social data, and device tokens, and to sign you in.
- Artificial intelligence providers — to generate and refine recipes, read imported recipe photos, answer cooking questions, create recipe images, and convert recipe steps into spoken audio.
- Analytics and diagnostics providers — to measure usage, run product experiments, and diagnose crashes and performance issues. Diagnostic session data is masked to reduce capture of personal content.
- Payment and subscription providers — to manage subscriptions and validate in-app purchases.
- Push notification delivery — to deliver notifications to your device.
Grocery ordering
If you choose to connect a grocery account (such as Kroger) to shop your ingredients, we share your approximate location (postal code), the ingredients you select to shop, and the resulting cart contents with that grocery provider so it can find nearby stores and add items to your cart. The grocery provider processes this information under its own terms and privacy policy. Connecting your grocery account is optional, and you can decline or disconnect it at any time.
Other users
If you use social features, certain information is visible to people you connect with — for example, your name and profile photo, recipes or cooking activity you choose to share, comments you post, and meal plans you share with or co-edit alongside others.
Legal and safety
We may disclose information if required by law, legal process, or government request, or where we believe disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, safety, or property of Expo, our users, or others.
Business transfers
If Expo is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this policy.
6. Data Retention
We retain your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the App. You can delete recipes and cooking activity within the App. When you request account deletion, we delete or de-identify your personal information, except where we are required to retain it for legal, security, or legitimate business purposes. Diagnostic and analytics data is retained for a limited period in accordance with our providers' standard retention practices.
7. Your Choices and Rights
- Account information — you can view and update your profile and preferences in the App.
- Notifications — you can enable or disable push notifications in your device settings; the App only registers for push after you opt in.
- Permissions — you can control camera, microphone, speech recognition, and location access in your device settings. Disabling them may limit related features.
- Access and deletion — you can request a copy of your personal information or request deletion of your account by contacting us at the email below.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the EU/UK GDPR or the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of your personal information, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights. We do not sell or "share" personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
8. Children's Privacy
The App is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
9. Security
We use industry-standard safeguards to protect your information, including encryption in transit, authenticated access controls, and optional biometric (Face ID) sign-in stored securely in your device's Keychain. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. International Data Transfers
We are based in the United States and process information there. If you access the App from outside the United States, you understand your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States and other countries where our service providers operate, which may have different data protection laws than your country.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice within the App. Your continued use of the App after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
